The veteran driver too his Toyota 86 to Mount Panorama in Bathurst to contest the 75th edition of the Australian titles.
"There were four groups and you were lucky to get three runs on the mountain if there were no accidents," Ron explained.
"That were enough to slow things down quite a bit."
Ron had two runs on the first day, three on the second day and one on the third day.
On his last chance to post a top time, Ron was plagued by timing issues and rain. His run was eventually cancelled.
Ron settled for second in his class after his best time of 61.13 seconds fell short of winner Paul Finch's 52 seconds.
Out of 148 entrants in line for the overall Australian title, Ron placed 124th.
"I suppose at 80-years-old I was there competing and doing my very best," Ron said.
In better news, Ron walked away with the Captain Peter Janson Memorial Trophy. The award was based on his performance, points and record breaking drives in 2018 and 2019.
He was thrilled to receive the sought after trophy.
"It was extra special this year because it was from the national event," Ron said.
Hand surgery following the event has prepared Ron for his 'farewell tour' in 2020.
He will contest the State hillclimb series for the final time before bowing out for good at the 2020 national titles in Queensland.
"This will be my last hurrah," Ron said.
"You can't keep going much longer after you turn 80."
