Thirty per cent of the population is aged more than 65 years, compared with 20.6 per cent for the rest of regional NSW
The majority of these 'older' residents would prefer to remain in their own home for as long as sensibly possible.
A forum to showcase the options which enable and support members of the community to age in their own homes will be held in Forster late next month.
The Aging at Home Forum on October 24 is being hosted by Forster Health Committee and will be held at Club Forster.
Not just the elderly are expected to attend but community members aged in their 50s will join their senior counterparts.
This age group will be able to make necessary plans for themselves and increase their awareness of support available for elderly parents and family members, Forster Health Committee member, Ed Harvey said.
These could include home modifications, equipment suppliers, financial planners, legal decision making around enduring guardianship and power of attorney, aged and disability care service providers and service clubs.
Physical and social well-being activities will be promoted to maintain good health as we age, Mr Harvey said.
The forum promotes five key steps to living well at home:
- Keep moving;
- Eat well;
- Exercise your brain;
- Keep socially engaged, and
- Accept help.
More than 30 varied information stands for will be available for browsing from 12.30pm followed by a program of interesting and informed speakers and light-hearted entertainment - plus more browsing until close at 6pm.
