Bronson Rangi was on the bench for the Ratz in last weekend's major semifinal against the Forster Tuncurry Dolphins and prop forwards will not come heavier than this Man Mountain in tomorrow's elimination final against the Wallamba Bulls at Taree Rugby Park.
The scrum was where Wallamba were vulnerable early on in the minor semi-final against the Wauchoper Thunder only for the club's great warrior, Daniel Hessing, to restore order before the Thunder gained match-winning dominance.
Ultimately, Wallamba won the game, 37-27, in the process eliminating the Thunder from the Kennards Hire premiership play-offs.
But the cave-in of the Bulls' first scrum would not have escaped the attention of the Ratz' coach, Mitch Carter, and the destructive power of Rangi must be very close to the forefront of his thinking for tomorrow's final.
The Ratz have the necessary big men up front as was seen as they took a 17-0 lead over Forster in the major semi-final last weekend only to be run down in the last 20 minutes as their rivals ran in four tries to win 26-20. In the process, the Dolphins retained their season's unbeaten record.
That defeat and the memory of it will haunt the Ratz for some time. It will require strong leadership from coach Carter and No 8 skipper Sam Hartnett and a band of resilient players to shrug it off and overcome the Bulls and qualify for the grand final.
The Bulls are well-equipped for the lineout in Rhys Hessing and Jeremy Kelly, but to outclass the Ratz' forward foragers, Luke Couch, James Grainger and Steven Taylor and to out-run Taree's exceptional back line, from halfback Bayley Weaver to goal-kicking fullback Ricky Campbell, they will need an exceptional performance.
Having performed so well and come so far, I don't think the Ratz will stumble at the last hurdle this time.
