In response to negative community feedback, MidCoast Council has suspended its program of assessing memorial monuments in local cemeteries to see if they present risks to the public.

Council says the program, which resulted in the laying down of headstones and monuments deemed unsafe, is now under review.
"The feedback we have received clearly indicates the community is not happy with the process," council's Paul De Szell said.
Council had recently inspected monuments at the Bight Cemetery near Wingham, resulting in the laying down of a number of monuments.
The Bight Cemetery is one of the area's oldest.
Members of the community expressed their concern about the number of monuments deemed unsafe and the way the monuments had been handled.
"As a result of this feedback we are reviewing both our procedures and our position on the matter."
Mr De Szell said council would be working with its heritage advisor to review procedures before continuing the program.
