Is your car and driving ready?
Fortunately on the Mid North Coast our winters are mild.
But, there are still a few things that can impact your driving in the colder months.
As the old saying says prewarned is prearmed.
The main component in your car that suffers in winter is the battery.
Batteries don't like cold weather.
If they are on the way out they inevitably fail in winter.
Freezing cold morning starts, lights on for longer periods all contribute to pushing a battery over the edge.
Check all battery terminals for corrosion.
Have your battery tested by an auto electrician.
Check the operation of all controls.
Does your heater and its booster fan work?
What about the wipers and washers?
Turn on the air-conditioning fortnightly to keep the seals supple so the gas can't escape.
Your air-conditioning removes moisture.
It can be the most effective and fastest way of demisting the windscreen even if it is cold.
Drive with extra caution in winter.
Shorter days mean poorer visibility.
Ensure your tyres are in good condition.
Roads may be slippery.
Ensure you leave the three second gap to the car in front.
If driving to the snowfields or into colder climates check out road conditions and take the appropriate precautions.
A safe car and courteous and careful driving will see you survive the long winter months.
