With 20 songs punctuating Elton's classic trajectory from pub rock to riches to rehab, Rocketman works as an old-style musical.
A few tinkling bars picked out by young Elton foreshadow Candle in the Wind; an extravagantly recreated concert performance delivers Honky Cat; Crocodile Rock bursts through the confines of a pub gig to range through streets full of dancing flashmobs.
Taron Edgerton, hitherto best known as the tyro secret agent in Kingsman, makes a fair fist of the songs. The film's culminating musical number was a recreation of the original video of I'm Still Standing, which was shot in Cannes.
In the Guardian, Peter Bradshaw gave it three stars, describing it as "rousingly good natured" while reminding us it is the authorised version of Elton John's life.
