Light traffic travelling north has been diverted at Twelve Mile Creek along The Bucketts Way, rejoining the highway at Nabiac, while southbound traffic is slowly moving past the crash site.
The three-car collision occurred just after 2pm this afternoon, Sunday 14 April.
The male driver of one vehicle died at the scene, while another driver was trapped in one of the other vehicles.
A child passenger in one of the vehicles was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The third driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Bulahdelah Hospital where he will undergo mandatory blood and urine tests.
The diversion to Gloucester and then Avalon Road to Nabiac is expected to add an additional 45 minutes to travelling time.
Local residents will be allowed access beyond the diversion point.
Drivers should expect delays and use alternate routes.
Heavy vehicles are advised to use the New England Highway or delay travel.
There is no forecast as to when the highway will reopen.
