Two young volunteer surf lifesavers from the Great Lakes have been named the Newcastle Permanent Junior Lifesaver of the Year for Surf Life Saving Lower North Coast (LNC) branch. Brady Cross from Black Head and Olivia Willias from Forster were presented with their awards at last Sunday’s (February10) LNC branch championships, hosted by Cape Hawke SLSC. The two-day event attracted six clubs from the branch. Surf Lifesaving LNC vice present, Paul Scott, was the master of ceremonies and detailed the nomination and interview process that the nominees had participated in for this award, and what it meant to be nominated by the club, while branch president and SLSNSW deputy president, Brian Wilcox welcomed dignitaries. Mr Wilcox was pleased to speak about the benefits to the community of surf life saving youth programs such as the Junior Lifesavers of the Year and Youth Opportunity Makers and the prestige attached to being nominated by their clubs and ultimately winning such an award. Cape Hawke member, Mal Flew was presented with a 25-year certificate and medal for his dedicated to surf lifesaving . The nominees for Junior Lifesaver of the Year were:
