The blaze started about 7.30pm on Thursday at Bulahdelah. The truck driver managed to escape, but it took fire fighters most of the night to contain the fire.
The highway remained closed on Friday morning and motorists have been advised to avoid the area.
Drivers can detour via the Bulahdelah Way exit off the highway and rejoin at the Lee Street roundabout back onto the Pacific Highway.
The highway is expected to remain closed until mid Friday afternoon.
This was the second truck to go up in flames in one day.
A truck carrying a load of building waste was travelling on the New England Highway when another truck driver pulled up beside it and frantically gestured at the B-double trailer.
Moments later the rig was engulfed in flames to the horror of passing motorists.
An excavator was used to break open the truck’s trailer so the smouldering load of building waste that had ignited in the blaze could be extinguished.
All westbound lanes on the New England Highway were closed and traffic was diverted via John Renshaw Drive and Weakleys Drive for several hours.
Emergency crews remained on the scene during the afternoon before the road was reopened at 6pm.
Last week the M1 Motorway at Wollongong was closed for almost an entire day after a tanker carrying 36,000 litres of unleaded fuel burst into flames.
