The film is dedicated to Spider-Man co-creator, Steve Ditko, who died on July 6, 2018, while this film was finishing production. Completing the animation for the film required up to 140 animators, the largest crew ever used by Sony Pictures Animation for a film.
There are several visual homages to scenes from the live action Spider-Man films – the upside-down kiss (Spider-Man 2002), the train stopping sequence (Spider-Man II 2004), Peter Parker's infamous finger guns strut (Spider-Man 3, 2007) and an altered version of the ferry splitting sequence (Spider-Man: Homecoming 2017).
