Wednesday was a day to celebrate the abilities of people with a disability, to acknowledge their contribution to the community to help break down barriers and encourage inclusion.

It also was a day to showcase the work undertaken by a group from support service, MidCoast Assist who have been participating in the Plants with Purpose program, held at the Green Garden, Tuncurry Community Recycling Centre.
A set of Christmas carols from MidCoast Assist choir was an added, special bonus to the celebrations.
The group have been travelling to the Green Garden every week for the past six months, learning a variety of plant propagating and re-potting skills, and at the same time gaining valuable knowledge about the importance of recycling.
Plant and plant cuttings are sourced from the tip or donated to the group by members of the public.
Propagated and re-potted plants are sold to the public with sale funds going towards the purchase of potting mix, fertiliser or anything needed to grow a healthy plant.
“It is about them taking ownership of the program,” MidCoast Assist day program co-ordinator, Sandy Davis said.
Some group members have taken the recycling education a step further, bringing in food scraps from their homes for the on-site worm farm.
“It also is teaching them skills to look after the environment.”
Resource Recovery MidCoast region manager, Krysten Banks, who has been assisting with the project said she had seen a vast improvement from the group in a variety of skill sets.
