This weekend, the Great Lakes will become the centrepiece of dragon boat racing as the Pearl Dragons prepare to host the annual regatta from November 17-18.

“This is our seventh annual regatta in what is our 10th anniversary season; a very exciting season,” Great Lakes Pearl Dragons president Denise Marr explained.
Saturday will see sports teams gather in the afternoon for the 2k/500 metre turn mystery race, while Sunday will host the main event, where teams compete in the fast paced 200 metre sprints.
Trophies to be claimed include Sport Mixed, Sport Women’s and Sport Men’s.
“This year our entries in the men’s are up,” Denise continued.
“We should be in for some powerful fast racing.”
Teams from the Northern region will compete against teams from Newcastle, the Central Coast, Sydney and the South coast.
Whilst competition is fierce, the Pearls regatta is known as the friendly regatta and a lot of competitors are expected to extend their stay.
“On Sunday, the Marine Rescue will be running a barbecue, and coffee will be available, or bring a picnic,” Denise added.
