Written for the screen by Edgerton, based on the memoir by Garrard Conley, Kidman is the forgiving mother of a gay son played by Lucas Hedges. Crowe is the preacher father of the young man, and sends him to a “conversion therapy” camp to stop him thinking about men.
Kidman has said she wanted to be a part of something that could instigate change. Edgerton says he wanted to preserve the complicated nature of the subject when translating it to the screen. He also plays the part of the convener of the camp and directed in character the scenes he was also in. He says, despite the steps the father takes to try to change his son, it was motivated by love and there were no villians in the story.
