Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club’s Joan Thomas and Forster Bowling Club's Claire Kelly were in the victorious Women’s Bowls NSW (WBSNW) senior State side, which claimed victory.
The over 60s NSW ladies State team took out the 2018 Australian senior sides championship, held on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula, in a dramatic finish.
More in Great Lakes sport:
The seniors event brings 192 of Australia’s finest overs 60s male and female bowlers to represent their states and play for the Betty Collins OAM and the John Dobbie AM trophies respectively.
Joan and Claire helped their team claim the trophy in dramatic fashion, sealing the victory on the very last end of the last finishing rink in their match against WA.
On the way to their win the team recorded victories against SA, NT, Victoria, Tasmania and WA.
The team, which was selected from clubs all across NSW, last won the title in 2012.
Women’s president, Maryann Parcell, was delighted with her team’s efforts throughout the week.
“I could not be prouder of the girls, what an awesome team to be a part of,” she said.
“To win the title in such exciting fashion is a testament to their hard work and determination throughout the year.
“The team’s friendship certainly shone through and went a long way to bringing this title to NSW.
“They are fantastic ambassadors of our great sport.”
This win caps off a great year for the WBSNW State teams, with the open side also winning the Australian event for the sixth time in seven years.
