The former Gloucester Shire Council deputy mayor at the time of the merger between Great Lakes and Greater Taree councils in May 2016, said her initial role was about adjusting to life in an amalgamated council.
Cr Smith was re-elected to the job at the September monthly ordinary council meeting following a split vote between herself and Cr Karen Hutchinson.
She will be up for re-election in 12 months.
“I try to keep an open mind about treating the area as a whole rather than separate areas,” Cr Smith said.
“Everything is done a lot different compared to Gloucester like beaches and erosion.
“There are many similarities and differences from each council.”
Cr Smith’s main goal for her next tenure is to visit as many communities in the local government area as she can.
“I want to make a point of visiting outlying areas so they can see me face-to-face.
“I want people to come up and have a chat.
“It’s for the community and that’s why I’m doing it.”
