One of the great young leaders at Forster SLSC, Joel Fleming recently attended the 2018 SLS NSW Junior Development Academy.
The surf sports development camp, held annually at the Sydney Academy of Sport, invited the top 12, 13 and 14 year old surf life savers from across the region to train with state coaches in technique analysis, athlete education sessions, and improving skills across all water and beach based disciplines.

“Joel has been in nippers since he was six, and has seen other people from Forster attend this event, it’s something he has always wanted to do,” Joel’s mother, Claire explained.
“This year he was finally old enough.”
The program involved a three day camp from October 10-12, with up to four athletes from each of the 11 NSW branches eligible to participate.
“They do team building, athlete testing, swimming, lake paddle, beach events and lots of other things,” Claire said.
“Then they finish with a mini carnival on the last day that brings together everything they have learned over the three days.
“Joel has always loved being involved at the club, and as long as he’s enjoying it we are encouraging.
“His two little sisters do nippers as well and want to do the camp when they are old enough too.”
