Passing by on any fine Sunday afternoon, one might catch a glimpse of the lovingly-made cubby house, or hear the lilting laughter drifting across the sand on the breeze.

One might then assume what they have stumbled upon is perhaps the passing flight of fancy of a carefree group of children, but in reality, the Sandhill Girls Club is so much more.

Dawn Day foundered the special organisation in the name of fun and adventures for her granddaughter, Ciel and her friends. From there, it has grown into a humanitarian project.

“I started our little club 18 months ago because I believe children need to make lots of happy memories,” Dawn explained.

“Now, we all look forward to our Sunday arvos in the sun. We keep a diary of our meetings and have had some fabulous adventures.”

The bond of the Sandhill girls was born in preschool, and as they years passed and they moved on to kindergarten and then primary school, it only grew stronger.

“The parents of our girls have all become friends, and I feel privileged to be included in their families,” Dawn said.

Whilst playing in the sun and sand is a mutual passion for all the girls, there is a greater cause that tugs on their heart strings and calls them to action.

Dawn explained the girls created a mission for themselves, to help raise money for children who live in dangerous situations around the world.

Each girl donates a small amount from their pocket money to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at each gathering. 

Their most recent project is to help the victims of the Sulawesi tsunami and earthquake, through a fundraising garage sale this weekend.  

"Forster is so beautiful and safe and we are free to do whatever we want," club member, Ruby McNeil explained.

"The refugee children don't have the opportunity to do all the things that we do so I want to help them,” Audrey Dorfling continued.

“They don't have anything easy, so if we raise money and give it to them it might help them live a happier life,” Milla Dorfling added.

The girls have planned a Mexican themed sleep over on Friday night, in celebration and preparation for their ‘monster garage sale’.

"If you want a bargain and would like to meet these seven special little girls, the sale is at 6 Bangalow Place, Forster from 7am on Saturday, October 20,” Dawn explained.

“They are just the most wonderful, thoughtful girls, and they are putting themselves out there and doing a wonderful thing, I think that’s really special.”
