Oscar showed his knowledge of Mid North Coast beach breaks, putting on a commanding performance in the final to post a heat total 16.00 points after a variety of impressive turns and snaps.
Salt left his competitors requiring near perfect scores to take back the lead and eclipse his heat total, and was able to capitalise on his solid start and control the final to take victory.
To make the victory even sweeter, Salt was awarded the best male overall performance for the event.
The victory backed up Oscar’s performance last week in the first event of the series at Torquay, where he came fifth, and saw him take second place in the Australian rankings with three events completed.
Oscar will next travel to SA at the end of October to compete in event number four or the five event series.
His victory at Newcastle gains direct qualification to the national final, to be held in Wollongong in January.
The list of previous GromSearch winners illustrates the significant history of the series, with World Surf League (WSL) competitors Gabriel Medina from Brazil, Tyler Wright from Australia, Owen Wright from Australia, Matt Wilkinson from Australia, Jordy Smith from South Africa, Kolohe Andino from USA and Sally Fitzgibbons from Australia among the former competitors and GromSearch International Final champions.
After the last event in QLD, the top ranked surfers will qualify for the Rip Curl GromSearch National Final in their respective divisions, where they will compete for the chance to become the Australian GromSearch Champion.
The national champion then represents Australia at the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final, held at a new location around the globe each year, against the best junior surfers in each participating country.
