Last month Wingham RSL Sub-branch held a small but significant commemoration for Vietnam Veterans’ Day.
In 2019, members who served in D Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in Vietnam will be heading to Wingham for their 2019 reunion on August 18.
Vietnam Veterans Day is always commemorated on August 18. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966 against overwhelming odds.
It was this battle that was to later form the date to commemorate and recognise the service and sacrifice of the 55,000 Australians that fought in South Vietnam.
6th Battalion was to return to South Vietnam for their second tour in 1969/1970 for another year of arduous and successful operations and consolidation patrols.
A number of local veterans served in 6th Battalion on these tours including Al Valentine (Lt Col. Rtd).
“Several members of the D Company Association were present for last months’ commemoration. They took the opportunity to look over the accommodation, facilities and the district in preparation for our reunion next year.” Allan said.
Wingham RSL Sub-branch president, Terry Gould said, “We are delighted to be hosting this distinguished unit’s reunion in Wingham next year and feel sure other local sub branches will join us in making this reunion and commemoration a success.”
