KEVIN Robinson (Tuncurry Beach) has racked up another title after partnering Matt Sargeant to win the Zone 11 bowls champion of champion pairs at Taree West.
This win has also further cemented Robinson’s hold on the bowler of the year crown.
To reach this final Robinson and Sargeant had wins over Wayne O’Neill (Lansdowne) and Bill Martin (Taree Leagues). Their opponents in the final were Gary Basham and Ashley Hinton (Taree West), who had defeated Jason Aurisch (Black Head) and Craig Colligan (Harrington) along their way to the decider.
Playing on their home turf, and with the crowd behind them, Basham and Hintony scored on the first two ends to lead 3-0. Robinson and Sargeant then opened their account with a 4 and a one, but the Taree West duo held firm to hold a narrow 6-5 lead after six ends. Over the next seven ends Robinson and Sargeant outscored their opponents 10 shots to 2, and had established a handy 15-8 lead after 13 ends.
Basham and Hinton then fought back with their own revival to score a 2, 1 and a 5 on successive ends, to again hold a slender 16-15 lead. This proved to be short lived as the Tuncurry Beach pair immediately hit back with a five of their own, following up with a two to again have the advantage 22-16.
Basham and Hinton would not lie down, and came back with a three. The nail in the coffin was on the second last end, when Robinson and Sargeant scored a two to go into the last end leading by five.
This proved to be too big a task at this stage of the game, and although Basham and Hinton managed to score three and narrow the gap, it was not enough. The final score was 24-22 to the Tuncurry Beach pair.
Robinson is having a stellar year, also winning the champion of champion aingles, zone fours, zone senior pairs while he was runner-up in the zone senior singles.
