Ratepayers have voiced their thoughts on MidCoast Council’s proposal to re-brand the tourism area which sits within the LGA.
Of the options put forward – Nature’s Coast, Adventure Coast and Lakes Coast – Barrington Coast appears to be the favourite, according to council’s meeting agenda.
Councillors will debate the name change this Wednesday, July 25.
Many residents asked why council was paying consultants for a name change, which they believed was confusing, while at the same time placing roads and bridges as more urgent agenda matters.
“Really, how confusing Barrington is forests, parks, snow, how does that relate to coastal, warmth, beaches and lakes,” Debbie McMillan posted on the Great Lakes Advocate Facebook page.
“Really spend the money on road quality.”
Caroline Collin agreed.
“I thought I read Barrington Coast.
“That is just confusing for tourists. It's like saying Canberra's Jervis Bay (similar distance) or Redwoods NP San Francisco. Totally confusing.
“Get real and save us ratepayers those dollars better spent on local community infrastructure. Mid North Coast is just fine.”
Bev Maybury wrote that none of the names offered were any good.
“As I've said before, if that's all the consultants came up with don't pay them.
“Don't re-brand us - just fix the roads and bridges.
“Drove to Forster and Taree last weekend – roads are terrible.”
Grace Cooper asked council to spend more money on the ‘war on waste’ instead of re-branding.
“Allow kitchen scraps in the green bins like Hastings does.”
According to Graham Robinson MidCoast was not changing it’s name.
“Barrington Coast is an option being considered by the tourism industry as I understand it to promote our LGA as a unique destination.
“Seek the facts then make informed comment so we as a community can act as one for the betterment of our beautiful MidCoast.”
“Totally confusing,” Roberta Pearce posted.
“Barrington is nowhere near the coast ..... or are they looking at a different map?
"It would also cost millions to change all the advertising and signs ... yet another total waste of money if it goes ahead.
“There is nothing wrong with our current Mid North Coast. ... Gloucester ... Taree ... Great Lakes ....
“Leave it alone
“Fix the Roads and build footpaths .... that will be more helpful to the ratepayers who pay your wages.”
