The event is designed so the kids and their families can have some fun and learn more about managing their diabetes in a safe and supportive environment.

“Children living with diabetes often feel different because they need to monitor their blood glucose, take insulin and pay careful attention to their diet, exercise and general health,” Diabetes NSW and ACT CEO, Sturt Eastwood said.

“Days like this, let them know they’re not alone because they get to have fun with other children living with diabetes. It helps to boost their confidence and self-esteem.

“The day also provides a genuine opportunity for families and carers to get together, share experiences and create a support network in their local area,” Sturt said.

There are more than 3500 people living with diabetes in the Taree local government area. Almost nine per cent are living with type 1 diabetes, an incurable autoimmune condition, and many are children.

“Diabetes is a serious condition that can lead to a number of health issues if not managed well,” Mr Eastwood said. “So it’s vital for families to have a good diabetes management plan in place and the support of their local health care team. Diabetes NSW and ACT is also here to help with programs and services that provide tips and advice on diet, exercise and maintaining good general health.”
