Great Lakes College’s boys tennis team has won the Hunter Regional title for a second successive year.
The boys won a series of finals against the strongest teams from Newcastle and the Hunter at the recent finals day.
The team consists of Nathan Monk, Sam Gibson, Eli Worldon and Blue Evans (the same combination that won last year and finished fourth at the State finals).
The boys had cruised through the early rounds and had a walk-over in their quarter final.
In the semifinal they played Tomaree High School and won by the remarkable score of eight sets to nil, with a total of 48 games to three.
The final against Lambton was closer and featured some very high level tennis.
The teams split the doubles sets and then Great Lakes won two of their singles.
The crucial match was the number three singles, won in a tight struggle by Eli.
That gave Great Lakes a nearly unassailable four sets to two lead.
The reverse doubles proved to be a bit of a formality, resulting in a reasonably comfortable win for Great Lakes College.
The boys all displayed some high quality tennis skills and teamwork, plus their ability to be good sportsmen and fine ambassadors for the school is outstanding.
The team has now qualified for the State finals, to be held at Ulladulla in August.
They once again should perform well.
