Founded by surfing enthusiast, Amanda Marechal, marine ecologist, Roberta Dixon-Valk and environmentalist, Tim Silverwood in 2009 the group is working to stop the impacts of plastic pollution through education and participation.
Next Tuesday, May 29 Take 3 is bringing its Project Green Sea Turtle to the Great Lakes.
A student leader workshop with an Aboriginal perspective under guidance from Woromi Local Aboriginal Land Council, Project Green Sea Turtle is a collaboration between Take 3, Hunter Local Land Services, MidCoast Council and Midcoast Waste Services under funding from the Australian National Land Care Program.
Nine primary schools from throughout the Midcoast Council are sending student leaders and environment teams to learn of the impacts of plastic pollution, campaign techniques, student leadership skills and to gain a greater understanding of the significance of connecting to land and sea.
The day-long workshop will be held at Forster Surf Club from 9am to 2.30pm.
During this exciting student-driven project, student leaders become their school’s experts/advocates for marine creatures – in particular the Green Sea Turtle.
This diverse program increases students’ knowledge of beach litter, threats to marine creatures and human activities that will help protect these animals.
Students then utilise this knowledge to create an education campaign aimed at raising awareness within the school or local community about marine debris issues.
“With over eight million tonnes of plastic entering the oceans each year and with numbers predicted to triple over the next seven years, scientists predict that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish,” Take 3 co-founder Amanda Marechal said.
“We all need to take responsibility by using less single use plastic and stopping pollution at the source. Project Green Sea Turtle gives students the tools and opportunity to engage the broader school community to take positive action.”
Speakers will include representatives from Local Land Services, Take 3, Midcoast Waste Services, Australian Sea Bird Rescue and Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.
