Few would really enjoy wet weather riding.                         

Recently ex-motorcycle paramedic and trainer, Paul Riley did a segment on wet weather riding on my radio program.

As Paul said - sooner or later we are all going to get caught in the rain.

What to do?

First of all your bike should be in good nick with good rubber.

Our attitude to riding in the rain is critical.

Paul said to do the reverse of the norm and relax.

Hard to do!

He gave an example of trying to clean your teeth if you were to tense all your arm muscles up - you can’t do it.

Relax your arms and look ahead, the bike will behave and go where pointed, even in the rain.

Make sure you stay dry.

Layers of clothing are the best way to do this in wet weather, also the best way to keep warm.

His final tip was to make sure your bike has ABS.

If you have to do an emergency stop ABS will stop your wheels locking and you being thrown down the road.

Paul strongly suggests you go out on a wet day, find a quiet road and practice correct use of your ABS brakes.

Riding in the rain is part of being a motorcyclist.

At some point you simply can’t avoid it.

By taking the right precautions and approaching it with a positive attitude it will become just a part of your motorcycling experience.

You still may not like it but it will become a lot easier.
