Earlier this week, Thursday, May 17 three art students hosted a colourful pop-up art exhibition at Tuncurry Tafe campus as part of a revitalising public spaces assignment.
To maximise public engagement, organisers Jeni Monks, Anne Grant and Anthony Bowden, held the pop-up exhibition outside the hospitality school where on Thursdays barista skills are put to the test and coffee is sold to the community.
The empty spaces next to the coffee window were filled with an exhibition of paintings, drawing and sculptures.
This form of place making seeks to engage the local community, bring life to public spaces and offers the community an opportunity to experience interesting and unexpected events in their local neighbourhood, Jeni Monks said.
The students elected to take art out of the galleries and into the streets and to bring a splash of colour and inspiration to an otherwise dull concreted area.
Studying a Certificate IV Design, the students created the idea, decided to collaborate and together put on the art exhibition within a week.
The pop-up art exhibition was a great success, Jeni said.
More than 50 people attended the area and many stopped and viewed the artworks while they waited for the coffee to arrive, she said.
During the exhibition 25 people were asked their opinions and some of the feedback included: enjoying the opportunity to talk directly with the artist about the artworks, many appreciated the variety of artworks on display, many commented that any attempt to brighten up the area was welcomed and a number people attending the exhibition made enquires to purchase individual artworks.
