Fifty cents here, 20 there, just the odd spot of pocket jangle can add up to quite a sum, especially when donated frequently and by generous hands.

In this manner, Forster’s Skipjacks Social Bowling Club has slowly but surely gathered an impressive $500 to donate to the Ronald McDonald house, and the wonderful work it does.
“We get together for a game about every fortnight, and each time we play we send the collection box around and just gather up spare coins from the blokes that play,” club treasurer, Geoff Hancock explained.
“Sometimes we get up to 30 or 40 players each time, and they all dig into their pockets, and now, after a couple of years we’ve accumulated more than $500, and we are ready to do something meaningful with it.”
With a regularly high attendance rate and more than 56 years of history, it’s no wonder such a goal has been achieved, with members of Skipjacks representing a pocket of the most loyal and community-minded folks around.
“We’ve had some of the old blokes fade out, and some new members come in of course, and it’s just a real good gathering, we all enjoy getting together, having a chat and playing a social game or two,” Geoff said.
“Every second Sunday we get together. Sometimes we have club games, sometimes we go to other clubs like Harrington, Beresfield, and places like that for a bit of a spin.
“We’d really like to do something decent with this money we’ve raised. A few years ago we got up to $200, and we donated that, and this time we’ve put some good effort into it, and it would be nice to see something good come of it for the community.”
The club was formed by a couple of keen social fellows from Forster Bowling Club, and has since grown and been passed down through the hands of many in the community.
“It’s just hung in there for all this time,” Geoff laughed.
“A great group, a bit of fun, that’s all it comes down to. Through its time we have definitely been one of the largest social bowling clubs in the southern hemisphere, but definitely the oldest.
“They guys have just kept coming back!”
