Tuncurry-Forster Race Club

A combination of circumstances which could not be controlled has forced the cancellation of the Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club’s Sea Food race day.

The race day was scheduled for January 20.

A disappointed Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club president, Garry McQuillan attributed the cancellation to an outdated watering system and lack of decent rain.

The antiquated 36-year-old watering system failed leaving the Tuncurry track in this dry spell without water for two weeks with only two and a half inches of rain falling from November to now the sand base track has struggled to recover from the December 11 meeting, Mr McQuillan said.

There is no compromise for the safety of horses and jockeys that would be racing at the Tuncurry track on the January 20, he said.

“And, this reason there is no alternative than to cancel the meeting, their safety is of the highest priority of the committee of the TFJC and head steward Drew Smith.

“Racing NSW are very supportive of the club’s decision and in February a joint venture with the Tuncurry-Forster Jockey Club are installing a new irrigation system at the cost of $350,000.

“This watering system will see that this problem never occurs again.”

The next meeting, 2018 Men of League Day,  will be held on Saturday, March 10.
