“I just fancied a change,” he said.
“And it has been an absolutely fantastic change.”
Growing up at South West Rocks, Terry has always considered the sea to be in his blood, and so when he decided it was time to see what the rest of the world had on offer, Tuncurry was the clear choice for him.
“I wanted to stay coastal,” he said.
“Having been at South West Rocks all my life I couldn’t move away from the water. I thought this was quite a similar area, and there was a job here, so it just fit.”
Terry has now been in Tuncurry for 25 years, after taking the position of secretary manager at the Tuncurry Beach Bowling Club.
“I’ve been in the club industry for 45 years now,” he said.
“I started out as an apprentice green keeper at Kempsy Bowling Club, after I saw the position advertised when I was at school.
“So I jumped right in, and I stayed there for eight years, slowly working my way up the chain.
“While I was there I progressed from outside work to internal work.”
Since moving to the Great Lakes area, Terry has enjoyed building a strong relationship with the youth in the area, encouraging a love of sport and exercise in all ages.
“There is a great young sporting community here,” he siad.
“I am very passionate about promoting sport to the youth, supporting them and fostering a healthy active lifestyle.
“That has always been a big thing for me, and living here, all the young people are so eager to get involved, so it’s really easy.”
When he’s not working to develop young minds, Terry enjoys meeting all the different sorts of people that walk through the doors of the Bowling Club, and is still in love with the sweeping scenery of the Great Lakes.
“It is just beautiful here, and the actual people are so great.
“I’m very fortunate that in the industry I work in I get to meet all sorts of people, from all walks of life, there’s never a dull moment,” he said.
