The countdown to Christmas is on, and along with the abundance of chocolate, advent calendars and tinsel a special event is on the horizon; the Christmas party race day, next Monday, December 11 at Tuncurry Forster Jockey Club.

The first Monday meet to be held at the club, the Christmas party race day presents an excellent opportunity to gather some friends or work colleagues for a day of relaxed festivities at the races.

Tuncurry Forster Jockey Club president Garry McQuillan said the event should be a great day not to be missed.

“There are still seats available for booking in the pavilion, and gazebo seats too.

“It’s not too late to organise a day out, hold your Christmas work party, or just come yourself.

“You can book a table for 10 or a table for two for an excellent day at the races,” he said.

There will be bus services running to transport people to and from the event and the gates open at 12 noon.

“We have $20,000 prize money for each race to promote the event and get good horses travelling here,” Garry said.

“We’ve got horses are travelling from Newcastle and Kempsy and all along the North Coast on the day.”

The event, which will include seven races, is being sponsored by the Great Lakes Advocate.

Great Lakes Advocate sales manager Kelly Payne said the Advocate was the first corporate partner to sponsor an entire race day at the Tuncurry Forster Jockey Club in 2016.

“We're thrilled to be on board again in the same capacity, sponsoring the annual Christmas race day party.

“The Tuncurry Forster Jockey Club is a terrific story. In 2007 the course was almost deregistered by Racing NSW.

“Thanks to the vision and dedication of a new committee led by president Garry McQuillian and a small army of volunteers, the club's future looks strong. This continues to provide terrific benefits to our local economy.

“As the local newspaper it was not only fitting but extremely important that we committed to this partnership,” she said.

Several showpiece races include the Great Lakes Advocate Benchmark 65 Handicap (over 1400 metres), Manning Great Lakes Extra Benchmark 50 Handicap (over 2100 metres) and The Manning River Times Class 2 Handicap (over 1400 metres).

Nominations closed on Tuesday, December 5.
