Under the co-ordination of Tanya Brown, the section has seen a huge boost in entries and has increased from three-and-a-half days to five days in length.
Tanya describes a ticket to the instrumental section as the cheapest ticket in town.
“Not enough people realise they can come along and get a ticket to the Manning Entertainment Centre for only $7 and be thoroughly entertained by some of the area’s best musicians.
“For the eisteddfod’s 50th anniversary we have carefully programmed the week so there is a big event every night!”
- Monday May 22 – Big Band Night, which includes the performance by the area’s community based concert and brass bands, and community ensembles.
- Tuesday May 23 – The Junior Championship night, which includes the best instrumentalists aged 12 years and under. “Do not under-estimate the ability of these young musicians by their stature. They are amazing,” said Tanya.
- Wednesday May 24 – Senior Championship night, which includes some stunning performances from young musicians from the age of 13 years, the presentation of major awards and includes a performance by adjudicator Mr Guiseppe Zangari, an amazing a classical guitarist.
- Thursday May 25 – 2017 Battle of the Bands, which allows young bands to perform using the full stage light and sound show of Manning Entertainment Centre.
“We also have a CASIO Digital Piano Competition on Friday, May 26, where a performer will win a new digital piano as part of their prize.”
The adjudicator for the section is Giuseppe Zangari.
Born in Sydney, Giuseppe received his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying under the distinguished pedagogue Gregory Pikler.
He was awarded and Australian Council grant and a scholarship from the Italian Government which saw him head abroad to Milan in 2006.
There Giuseppe undertook further studies with duo Maccari-Pugliese at the Accademia Internazionale della Musica, and Paolo Cherici at the Conservatorio di Musica ‘Giuseppe Verdi’.
Between 2003 and 2015, Giuseppe was a teacher and lecturer at the Newcastle Conservatorium, University of Newcastle and more recently has taught at the Sydney Conservatorium, University of Sydney and at the School of the Arts and Media, University of New South Wales.
His duties have also included direction and tutoring of guitar ensembles in the chamber music program.
At the Newcastle Conservatorium, Giuseppe assisted in the development of a new guitar syllabus with colleagues.
In addition to Giuseppe’s university teaching activities, he is also a guitar examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB).
Giuseppe has a deep interest in the research and performance of the 19th century Italian composer Mauro Giuliani.
Giuseppe’s research specifically looks at instrumental music created from popular operas of the 19th century.
He also has an interest in the advancement and development of contemporary Australian compositions.
He has performed in premieres of solo and chamber works by Australian composers including Rosalind Carlson, Andrew Chubb, Nigel Butterley, Stephen Lalor, Christopher Sainsbury and Jim Chapman.
As a soloist and chamber musician, Giuseppe has given live broadcasts for ABC Classic FM through the Young Australia Series and Sunday Live, 2MBS FM and 2NUR FM.
He has also performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician at a variety of festivals and concerts throughout Australia.
His concert tours have included New Caledonia with celebrated Australian pianist Simon Tedeschi, an Australian concert tour with noted French guitarist Rafael Andia in the Alhambra Guitar Quartet and in 2014, an extensive concert tour of Sweden with flautist Sally Walker and the Haga Duo (Sweden).
Giuseppe’s most recent chamber collaborations include internationally acclaimed flautist Jane Rutter, baritone Jose Carbo, violinist Victoria Jacano-Gilmovich, mezzo soprano Jenny Duck-Chong and conductor Christopher Bearman.
He has recently worked with several orchestras, including the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Nova, Central Coast Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Classical Guitar Society as well as working with the Concertante Ensemble, Christ Church Camerata, Halcyon Ensemble and the vocal quartet Waxing Lyrical.
He has a keen interest in developing young guitarists to realise their full potential through comprehensive instruction in a fun and enthusiastic learning environment.
Giuseppe is principal of the newly founded Sydney Guitar School located in the Sydney inner west suburb of Five Dock.
