And, that has in part been made possible through the Matt Nixon Memorial Police Charity Golf Day.
Since its inception 15 years ago the charity has donated more than $150,000 to the Great Lakes Hospice
This year’s event, a two person ambrose, will be held on Thursday, May 4 at the Forster golf course from 8.30am for a 9am short gun start.
The and organisers have put out a call for all golfers and non golfers to participate in this memorable event.
Proceeds remain in the local community and distributed to both the Great Lakes Hospice and the Cape Hawke Surf Club.
All up the charity has raised more than $180,000.
The Great Lakes Hospice has relied heavily on these funds and during the past 15 years has been able to expand its services with confidence.
The hospice has assisted the two local palliative care nurses in areas such as an equipment pool, expensive medication and the hiring as needed of a special hospital bed.
It also has supported the development of the oncology unit at Forster Private Hospital.
The golf day is conducted in memory of Matt Nixon a local police officer who was diagnosed with cancer in 1999.
Matt was an avid sportsman, an A-grade golfer, a member of the Cape Hawke Surf Club and played first grade rugby league.
Matt’s courage in battling his illness was astounding and inspiring with his determination to persist with his police work, golf and volunteering in many areas.
Organisers are also keen to hear from any potential sponsors of the event which in past years has had around 15 individual sponsors.
Enquiries can be directed to Marg Steel on 0409 54 7712 or email Marg at margsteel@bigpond.com .
Individual entry fee is $45.00 which includes drinks and lunch. Entries for the event close on 2 May.
