We had the Great Lakes under 16s to play against Wingham at John Martin Oval, both Great Lakes under 14s sides were to play against each other at South Street Oval 2 and the Great Lakes under 12s were to play against Taree West at Rec Ground 2.
The kids were all excited as were the coaches. Plans were being made and practice sessions arranged. Everything was looking great for the weekend.
We had some rain during the week but Thursday was a wonderful day with blue skies above and the sound of lawn mowers ringing out through the houses.
Surely this was a great sign.
Saturday morning... game day.... A text message received read: "Sorry kids, grounds closed, no game this weekend, thank you for a great season but no grand final will be played."
Kids hearts in the under 12s and under 16s sank. It was as if Christmas had been cancelled. But there was still hope as the South Street ground had not been closed.
Sadly though as it was time to start, the heavens opened and everyone quickly agreed to head home and try again tomorrow in a reduced overs match.
Sunday morning... game day take 2 for the under 14s.
A text message was sent to the under 14s. "Game called off, too much rain Saturday and over night."
Once again disappointment sunk in. All season kids had looked forward to being even a chance to play the grand final.
What does that mean for who are champions?
Well all teams are classed as joint winners as no game was able to be played.
So Great Lakes under 16s, under 14s white, under 14s green and under 12s white are all grand final winners, as are Wingham under 16s and Taree West under 12s.
This is a little consolidation to all kids.
From the Great Lakes Junior Cricket Club, we wish to again thank all coaches and parents that have offered to help umpire, score or even get a coffee run arranged.
Thank you to our sponsors, McDonalds Forster and Club Forster, we value your sponsorship and are extremly proud to have new uniforms and new equipment thanks to your support.
All of these things help make the club what it is and without the volunteers we wouldn't see the success that we have had.
All the best to all the kids in the winter sports and remember the club presentation is on the 29th of March at 5.15pm.
Keep an eye out around August and September for registration dates for next season.
