Over the last eleven years, two riders from WA are nominated by their campdraft committees to attend the event here. In exchange, two riders from Glowalman travel there, for a championship held in November.
This year Jacob Walmsley and Shane Favero are making the journey. They stay with local families and are supplied with two horses each to compete with.
Jacob started competing in junior horse riding in 2008 and became a serious competitor in the juveniles in 2011. All the horses he competes on have been bred and broken by him and his father.
Shane has been riding horses since he began to walk and competed in his first campdraft when he was nine years old. This year, Shane and Amigo have won Top Cut Out in Maiden draft, as well as other stockhorse events.
The name 'Glowalman' is a combination of Gloucester, Wallamba and the Manning Valley - the three areas in which the event takes place.
Kelvin Gregory from the organising committee says the rodeo was started 32 years ago as a tri-challenge competition for pony club aged children in sporting and campdrafting. At the time it began there weren’t any competitions available for junior riders.
He says it the only event in Australia run over a one week across three towns. Points earned by riders at Glowalman go toward the ABCRA ranking, with the top 25 contesting the national finals.
“It’s amazing what the kids forgo over their school holidays, just to attend the Glowalman,” he says.
Riders aged between 8 and 21 years will travel from all over the Australian and converge on the Nabiac showground for the first day of the campdraft and other sporting events on Tuesday July 12. Followed by Wingham on July 14 then to Gloucester for Family Fun day on Friday July 15 before sporting and campdraft on Saturday July 16.
The competition presentation will be held on Saturday evening, during which the two riders attending WA will be announced.
