This event, held on September 16 and 17 at Mylestom, saw strong competition between clubs contesting from Forster in the south to Ballina in the north.
The first day of competition was a three kilometre ‘Race around the Island’ and resulted in a second place to the combined team of Pearl Dragons and South West Rocks Dragons.
The following day was sprint racing over a 200 metre course, again with some clubs combining to fill the numbers required in a boat.
The Pearlers women combined with Nambucca Heads this time and took out the first place trophy. This was a stunning achievement from a group of paddlers from two separate clubs.
Along with this, the Great Lakes men achieved a third place in a team combined with South West Rocks.
The Pearl Dragons competed in the 200 metre mixed with a team of only 17 paddlers (instead of a possible 20). Only two men competed in this event. This team performed so well in their heats that they made it into the finals. Achieving a fourth place demonstrated that determination and dedication along with a spirit of teamwork can result in success in this fast paced sport.
Great Lakes residents are invited to come along to the Pearl Dragons next set of free lessons commencing September 24. For further information, contact club captain Wendy on 0407 543 813.
