Back in the mid 90s John Amato was a frustrated mechanic working on garbage trucks.

He had more than 20 years experience of all types of mechanicl repairs and a strong desire to get away from the dirty trucks and make better use of his skills.

With his wife Jan by his side the couple started John Amato Auto Repairs in Kularoo Drive Forster and kept fingers crossed they could make a go of their own business.

Fortunately John was a well known, “true blue local,” and word soon spread.

Friends started bringing their cars in for repairs and services and after a few flyer drops others started coming too.

Once everyone realised what a good job John could do they started recommending him to their friends.

Now the business boasts a loyal customer base that has spanned two decades in the Great Lakes region and John is servicing the cars of the next generation.

“Some of our customers have become very close friends,” said Jan.

“When something happens to them it’s like you’ve lost a family member.”

Honesty is at the heart of the business and key to the success of John Amato Auto Repairs which turned 21 on August 31.

“John doesn’t want to rip anybody off,” said Jan.

The business offers general mechanical repairs and servicing to all makes of cars and  four-wheel drives, trailers, light trucks and caravans.

They service both private and commerical clients and while they don’t specialise in any one type of vehicle, they do have a number of customers with hot rods and vintage cars.

John is a fully fledged car enthusiast and involved in a number of car clubs locally and in Sydney.

With two of his own Model A Fords at home John is well aware of the special needs of a classic or modified vehicle.

Twenty one years in business though is down to more than just being good at what you do. 

John and Jan take the time to get to know their customers and the problems that they need solved.

Jan and John are happy to offer a pick up and drop off service to their local area as well as Green Point, where they live so customers “don’t have to go anywhere.”

Customers have the flexibility of paying with credit card at the workshop and while bookings are of course required, John can usually get to service customer’s cars with less than a week to wait.
