“The usual meet the candidate structure has been thrown out the door with this one,” says chamber president Jeremy Thornton.
“We have just under 70 candidates with 11 groups and five independents. To do a session whereby they all get time to answer a series of questions is simply not practical.”

Mr Thornton says all group leaders and each independent will be given four minutes to introduce themselves and their group where applicable.
“If you do the math this alone is going to take 64 minutes, so imagine what it would be like if we then went into a detailed question and answer session!
“By doing it this way the community can wander among all the candidates and ask any questions they feel are important. This will give them the chance to talk to more candidates and make an informed decision about the issues important to them.”
Mr Thornton says a call out to all candidates has been made to attend the ‘Cuppa with the Candidates’ session at Taree Uniting Church hall from 5.30pm.
“We strongly encourage the community to be involved in this process. It’s the most important council election in our area for decades and we must get the right people into the job.
“The chamber has been advocating positive change since the amalgamation and now the rubber hits the road. We need people who are big picture strategists and not bound by traditional parochial lines. It’s MidCoast first if we are to become a power in regional NSW.”
Council candidates are asked to RSVP for the Cuppa with the Candidates session by emailing info@tareebusinesschamber.com.au or phoning 2BOB FM on 6552 6200.
