A record breaking $17,000 was raised at this year’s Matt Nixon police charity golf day, played at Forster.

The Cape Hawk Surf Club was given $2500 while the Great Lakes Hospice was handed a cheque for the balance following the successful annual event which attracted 130 players at Forster.
The committee expressed is appreciation for the work undertaken by the surf club, staffing both the hospitality tents and the golf course.
The event began with Matt’s mates and dad Garry getting together and playing golf in his memory, and funds were given to the Cancer Council.
After a couple of years it was Garry and mum Rhonda’s idea that the funds should stay local and these two charities have benefited by approximately $200,000 over the last 13 years with in excess of $170,000 going to support Great Lakes Hospice.
Great Lakes Hospice was formed in 1989 and money they receive is used to assist in the payment of charges for uninsured palliative patients so they can be admitted to Forster Private Hospital, pay for nursing services for patients who wish to remain in their own homes, provide special equipment on loan for patients in home comfort and payment for only procedures in the local hospital to eliminate patients travelling.
The committee thanked sponsors and donors, the Forster Tuncurry Golf Club and Cape Hawke Surf Lifesaving Club and all who contributed to making the day such a great success, and hoping for a bigger and better things next year.
