Head steward in the main pavilion, Mary Webber estimated entries were down by about 20 per cent on previous years.
She said the rain had had deterred many exhibitors from entering, while some roads had been cut making it impossible for others to get out of their front gates.
“It’s very disappointing,” Mary said.
“You can understand why the flowers are down; but what can you do.”
In the produce pavilion entries were dribbling in throughout the morning, much like the miserable weather outside.
The unseasonably long dry spell during summer had had a big impact on both fruit, vegetable and egg entries.
“The hens were not laying because of the heat,” chief steward, Ray McDonald said.
Children’s entries had dropped by 75 per cent, while adults were down by 50 per cent.
But, surprisingly poultry entries were up, Ray said.
With predictions of heavy rain tomorrow (Saturday) show society stewards plan to meet at approximately 4pm this afternoon to determine if the show will go ahead.
