The championship was decided in a game featuring eight of the zone’s most outstanding bowlers.
Vying for the title were teams which included Keeden McGuire, Peter Holland, Jason Morse and Dylan Riley from Forster against Steve Harris, Martin Gosper, Kevin Robinson and Rex Johnston representing Tuncurry Beach.
The game was played in almost perfect conditions with almost no breeze to speak of.
Both teams scored shots in the early ends before Dylan Riley’s team made a mini break to hold a lead of seven shots to three, and hold shot on the next end.
This is where probably the defining moment of the match occurred.
One down and with a lot of short bowls blocking a direct shot Rex Johnston from Tuncurry Beach was called to the head by his third, and a shot was discussed where he would drive at the inside edge of a wider bowl with the intention of coming off this bowl to take out the shot.
Johnston played this bowl to perfection, taking out the shot and scoring three for his team to only trail by the single shot.
This was a real turning point in this match.
They then went on a run of winning ends scoring another 12 shots to one and establishing a match winning lead of 18-8.
Despite Dylan Riley’s Forster team trying valiantly to the end, this margin was never threatened, and Rex Johnston’s team came home to be the 2017 Zone Fours Champions.
They will now progress to the State Championships in October and we wish them all the best in this quest.
Steve Harris has now been in the winning team in both the triples and the fours events, and he has established an early lead in the race for the Bowler of the Year title.
Don’t rest on your laurels “Harry”, everyone is now gunning for you.
Zone pennants
The most eagerly awaited time of the year is now upon us –pennant season.
Beginning this Saturday (March 4) clubs from across the zone in grades from 1-7 will be vying for the chance to win a zone pennant, and then have the chance to win a State title.
With 10 rounds to play, plus play-off games, competition will be fierce to secure those winning positions.
Good luck to everyone, may the games begin.
The zone 11 is managed by an executive committee and delegates (2) appointed from each of the 15 affiliated clubs of the zone.
