The event is the work of the Rotary Club of Great Lakes and the Great Lakes Creative Network and is set to be another huge tourism drawcard for the region.
Sydney Conservatorium of Music graduates will present solos, duets, trios and ensemble pieces from some of the best loved operatic and classical repertoire.
The company behind the performance, Voci Stupende, is a Sydney-based classical song company specialising in bringing exquisite music to regional areas.
Staged for the first time last year on March 19, Opera by the Lake has been supported this year by MidCoast Council with $3000 dollar in funding, as well as $2000 dollar from council to support the event through the Great Lakes Tourism Event Support Funding process.
In a letter to MidCoast Council administrator John Turner, Rotary Club of Great Lakes president Brian Bruton wrote of the immense benefits arts bring to regional areas.
“Presentation of the Arts brings significant benefits to regional communities such as ours and plays an important and transformative role in building regional competitiveness,” he wrote.
“The potential for cultural engagement to transform a regional centre is significant. It is our aim to make this an annual event and in time grow it into an Arts Festival. This event has the potential to invigorate Forster-Tuncurry and make it a place where people will want to come and attend this annual event. In turn, making Forster-Tuncurry and the region more productive and competitive.”
Mr Bruton said the event is a ‘unique opportunity’ for the Great Lakes as there is no similar event on the Mid North Coast and Northern Rivers.
Market research conducted on last year’s event displayed 60 per cent of patrons were from outside the region and 42 per cent stayed for more than one night.
The local spend across two days from these patrons was estimated to be around $96,000.
“We have demonstrated there is a demand for this type of event,” added Mr Bruton.
