Last weekend, Katie Jones and Simon Gay travelled to Penrith to race Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney.
Katie went into the race with a significant injury and was prepared for the fact that she would have to pull out of the race during the run leg.
To her credit, she fought on and came away with a personal best time of 5:23:20 for the 1.9km swim, 90km ride and 21.1 km run.
Simon, according to our source on the ground in Penrith was ‘in a world of pain’ during the run, but finished with a time of 5:13:18.
Penrith is a tough course as competitors aren’t permitted to wear wetsuits for the swim due to the high water temperature of Penrith Lakes, and also the swim is in fresh water which doesn’t give nearly as much buoyancy as salt water.
Being Western Sydney as well, the temperature became very hot as the day progressed making the run leg even harder.
This weekend just passed, Adrian Trotter, Paul Nixon and Cameron Taylor raced in the real West, travelling to Busselton in Western Australia to race the Ironman 70.3 over there.
Busselton is regarded as one of the fastest courses available with one of the professionals recording the fastest ever time for an Ironman race in Australia, and the boy’s times showed this as well.
Adrian finished in 4:40:43 for fourth in his age group, Paul came home in 4:48:10 for third in his age group and Cam beat the magical five hour mark coming home in 4:55:00.
Closer to home, we had our fourth graded tri of the season on Sunday with 21 racers turning up to pit themselves against the Forster Keys course.
Rhett Pattison clawed back two places on the bike to go from third to first and held on during the run to take out A-grade from Jarryd Tinson and Aaron Eichner.
Ryan Oxenford showed why his promotion to B-grade was justified by winning that division.
Good friends Tony Day and Scott Davies battled for the C-grade win with Tony taking it by just over a minute with Alicia Edge, making her return to racing after two years off coming third .
David Castle took out D-grade from Rochelle Lewis and Jacqui Day.
We have one more race for the year on December 18 at Forster keys before heading into a frantic month of races in January with Port Macquarie Tri Club coming to us for the return leg of the inter-club challenge on the January 9.
Our girls only race on the January 22 and our biggest event of the season a week later on January 29 with the Crowdy Head Triathlon being staged again.
See forstertriclub.com.au for details on how to enter these races.
