On his arrival at John Hunter Hospital Mr Rowland told Channel 7 he was happy to be alive.
Mr Rowland has been a much valued volunteer member of the Forster-Tuncurry Marine Rescue for the past two years.
The group posted a message on their Facebook pages saying, Marine Rescue NSW volunteer Colin Rowland is in hospital. We wish him well.
Sydney man, Richard Jankowska said he had been unaware of the attack until the emergency services turned up at the Booti Booti National Park, The Ruins Camping Ground.
Mr Jankowska, said the attack would not deter him from fishing and swimming, when the beach re-opened.
It was a similar story for Sydney Year 12 school leavers Tevita Vuki and Jakob Hammond who are camping at The Ruins until the weekend.
“We heard about the shark attack after the ambulance had left.” Tevita said.
The boys had planned to have a morning swim, but because of the heavy rain travelled into Forster to do shopping.
Swimming is off the agenda, but they will fish from the beach instead.
