The man, 65, was surfing near the Ruins campground at Pacific Palms when he was attacked about 9.10am.
There are reports his surfboard was bitten in half.
The man suffered lacerations to his leg and arm and was being treated by paramedics.
The shark is believed to be a great white and was estimated at between 2.5m and 3.5m long.
The Hunter Westpac rescue helicopter was enroute at 9.45am.
The attack is believed to have occurred near the Ruins campground.
