Racing is in the Howells’ family blood. Father Glenn was an Off Road racer and now his children Ally and Josh are regular competitors.
A blast from Glenn’s racing past was set to come and watch at the Nabiac event. This was his former navigator, who he raced with for two years, John Fawbert.
Leading up to the event, Ally’s navigator had dropped out and Glenn asked John to take up the position.
He did, and on the day, John and Ally put in a winning performance.
“John put together it had been exactly 27 years since he’d raced with me,” Glenn said.
To add to the special connection, Ally and John raced in the same car Glenn and John had raced in.
“It’s changed a lot, it’s basically a re-make of the original car.”
Glenn said, Ally and John had a great time competing with one another.
‘It brought back a lot of memories for me too,” he said.
“It was comforting to see her race with someone so experienced.”
Ally’s win at Nabiac, totals her wins as three across three events for this year.
Growing up, Ally was a champion motorbike rider.
It wasn't until she was 16, did her father suggest she give Off Road Racing a try.
“She’s been doing it for seven years now and has become accomplished in the sport,” Glenn said.
In their first time at the Nabiac championships, Glenn said, “it was a tough race in the sand”.
He said the organisers and community were very welcoming.
Next year Ally is keen to compete again and would like to upgrade to a bigger engine class, with a new vehicle in tow.
The Nabiac event was the final round of the NSW State Off-Road Championship.
Off Road Racing encompasses several different classes, with engine size, modifications done and how many wheels driving helping to determine which class the vehicle competes in.
This year’s event was named The Len Barron Commemorative Nabiac Airport Challenge, in honour of a Central North Coast Sporting Car Club member who died this year.
