Representing in the U15 age group are Ebony Woodfield from Taree High School, Jess Henwood from Great Lakes College, Forster Campus and in the U17 age group is Chelsea Green from St Clare’s High School.
There will be between 12 and 16 teams in each age group representing all zones in regional NSW, as well as a number of teams from metropolitan Sydney.
The championships will run over the two days of the weekend with pool games being played on Saturday and finals on Sunday.
Head coach for the U15 girl’s teams, Graham Sonter, said that in the last week of term three, all secondary schools in the Mid North Coast, extending from Coffs Harbour to Forster, were invited the send girls in the U15 and U17 age groups to attend a talent identification day at Crescent Head.
These talent tdentification days were held throughout NSW, and no area in the State saw the numbers that Mid North Coast did, having almost 200 girls attend.
“With this number of girls trialing for a 12 girl team in each age group, we were given dispensation to enter two teams in each age group, Mr. Sonter said.
“The girls in all teams have been training particularly well over the recent weeks, travelling to Crescent Head for each of their sessions.
“They are very keen learners, and using their natural talent are all progressing as very capable 7s Rugby players. NSW 7s selectors will be on hand in Coffs Harbour to further identify potential players for future representative honors.”
Rugby 7s is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players playing seven-minute halves, instead of the usual 15 players playing 40-minute halves.
