As an annual event, Australian Citizenship Day is a time to reflect on what it means to be Australian. In one of the most colourful Citizenship ceremonies witnessed by council staff, and only the second held under the MidCoast Council banner, twenty three people from all corners of the world pledged their commitment and took the final step in becoming an Australian citizen on Monday September 20.
Among the region’s newest citizens was Vivian Rogers, who as part of her affiliation with Great Lakes Australian Filipino Society Inc. performed traditional Filipino dances with other members from the society.
Family and friends crowded chambers to witness the celebration, along with Local Representative Committee members Jan McWilliams, David West, Robyn Jenkins and Trent Jennison, and acting commander, Manning Local Area Command, Christine George.
“Choosing to become an Australian citizen is a particularly significant occasion,” said John Turner, administrator for MidCoast Council.
“The MidCoast community welcomes its newest citizens and wishes them well as they take this important and final step to officially join the Australian family”.
MidCoast Council holds Citizenship ceremonies throughout the year - phone 6591 7222 for information on when and where the next ceremony will be held.
