FORSTER’S Sarah Ward is over the moon on her selection to attend the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra next year.
The National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) is a 12 day residential program for students entering year 12 who are passionate about science, technology, engineering and maths.
The 16-year-old, will be representing St Clare’s High School and the Rotary Club of Great Lakes.
Sarah’s selection involved penning an expression of interest to the local Rotary club.
Delighted with her application, the club put her through to the next round at Walcha.
“This involved many weekly meetings with members of the club, which helped me to prepare for the interview situations I would face at Walcha,” Sarah said.
Sarah attended district selections at Walcha Central School in July where she competed against around 40 other candidates.
Nervously she waited to hear back – in August she received the good news, she got in.
Held at the Australian National University, Sarah expects the forum to be a real ‘eye opener’ to her possibilities in the world of science.
She will take part in lab visits and listen to nationally and internationally acclaimed science speakers.
Sarah, who will start year 12 next term, said, “it’s good timing, as it’s just before we start back at school”.
She hopes the knowledge and inspiration she gains, will put her in a good frame of mind to tackle the HSC and her chosen science subjects of chemistry and physics.
Sarah is interested in the fields of health and medical science.
‘One day, I wish to be helping people through my job,” she said.
“Whether that be through world first research in a lab or performing life-saving operations – the pathways are endless. Attending the National Youth Science Forum will without a doubt help me get on the right track to achieving this success.”
Sarah’s trip will be supported by the Rotary Club of Great Lakes. She has enjoyed getting to learn more about the work of Rotary.
“Through Forster Surf Life Saving Club I knew a little about what they do – but seeing how it all works, I realise how much they help people.”
To raise the remaining funds Sarah has set up a Go Fund Me page.
