Two members of the public discovered the body at about 3.40pm on Wednesday (September 14) and alerted police shortly after.
A crime scene was established around 2km north from the beach entrance at Tuncurry, towards Black Head.
Manning Great Lakes Area Command inspector Allan Fidock said the body is in an advanced stage of decomposition, with no facial recognition or identification possible.
Police Rescue resources from Newcastle arrived today (Thursday, September 15) to transport the body to Newcastle for further forensic testing.
Inspector Fidock said the body appears to have been left for months.
He said investigations are in early stages, but if dental records are available identification could be made within days.
Without these records, identification using DNA can take weeks.
