A woman is dead and her husband is fighting for life after a possible murder-suicide attempt in Sydney's south west.

A relative visited the home of the couple on Links Avenue at Milperra, near Liverpool, on Tuesday afternoon after the woman failed to turn up to a belated family celebration.
The relative had not been able to reach the woman all day and raised the alarm.

When officers arrived at the home they found a woman in her 60's with serious head injuries. She died at the scene.
It is understood her husband, also in his 60's, was found with serious injuries in a car with the engine running in the garage of the split-level brick home.
He was rushed to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.
A crime scene has been established at the home with police stating they were not looking for anyone else in relation to the death.
